A COSY WHITE COTTAGE BY THE SEA
Hello cosy white cottage by the sea! This seaside gem is the essence of simplicity and spaciousness. Sunshine permeates through every room and fresh coastal air breathes into every space.
A SIX WEEK RENOVATION PAYS OFF
The owners of this last century weatherboard home transformed it in just six weeks after purchase, having bought it especially to renovate then sell at a profit. The previous owner had lived in it for decades and although well loved, it needed repairs and replacements plus a little coastal styling to embrace the laid back local vibe.
THE QUINTESSENTIAL AUSTRALIAN BEACH HOUSE
Situated in the coastal town of Ballina on the far north coast of New South Wales, the cottage is a short drive south of iconic holiday destination Byron Bay.
It’s perfectly placed to enjoy the surrounding coastline - empty, white sand beaches are an easy bike ride or walk away and winding walking trails across the headlands provide spectacular views across the Pacific.
SEASIDE COTTAGE STYLE : MIXING THE OLD + THE NEW
Many original features were thoughtfully kept intact, preserving a sense of history and imbuing it with heart and soul. Timber floorboards, mosaic style bathroom tiles, picture rails, the kitchen sink and even an original toilet weren’t replaced with modern alternatives.
Newer features were added as an update or repair : a crisp white picket fence, Colourbond roof to replace old tiles and Hamptons inspired cabinetry. This considered mix of old and new retains the home’s original character whilst adding modern coastal style.
HOW TO GET THAT SEASIDE-HOLIDAY-AT-HOME VIBE
1.
After a day on the beach you don’t want to go home to a space too precious that it can’t cope with sandy feet and salty skin. Low maintenance is key:- Stain-resistant, washable slip covers on sofas in neutral tones.
- Sisal rugs that can be shaken out.
- Baskets that can hold and hide a multitude of belongings like sunscreen and shoes.
- Minimal glass and mirrored surfaces where fingerprints and dust can build.
- Keep walls bare and simple with minimal artwork or coastal themed hooks for hanging beach towels.
2.
Softly whitewashed walls and matching ceilings bounce the sunshiney seaside light around internally, creating that quintessential ‘light + bright cottage’ feel.
3.
Add warmth and texture to invoke a sense of casual comfort : floorboards, timber furniture, sisal rugs and pieces crafted from wicker or rattan.
4.
Keep it simple : less mess, less stress … and less things to clean, maintain and store. Declutter your belongings down to only what you love and need. Your coastal cottage will look and feel spacious, light and bright.5.
A coastal cottage isn’t complete without a pair of Adirondack chairs on the porch! The perfect spot to dust off sandy toes, refresh yourself with iced tea and watch the clouds go by.
